One of the many benefits of K&N air filters is that they are washable and reusable. By cleaning your filter, you can ensure optimal performance and longevity. In this guide, we will show you step by step how to clean your K&N air filter.
Before we get started, you should know why K&N air filter cleaning is so important. The biggest reason is to ensure that clean air is being fed to the engine. A clogged or dirty filter is more likely to fail and let impediments into the engine. In addition, a dirty filter will restrict the airflow that enters the engine. With a reduction of air flow, performance will suffer. You may notice a loss in power, the engine sputtering, and poor acceleration. Once you know how to clean a K&N air filter, you can take action and prevent these issues from popping up.
Step 1: Inspect Your Filter
We suggest inspecting your filter annually or more often if you frequently drive in dusty or dirty environments. When dirt collects to a point that exceeds the wire mesh, it’s time to clean and recharge your filter.
Step 2: Remove the Air Filter
To get started, carefully remove the air filter from the stock air box or from the end of the intake system tube.
Step 3: Spray with K&N Power Kleen Air Filter Cleaner
Liberally spray both sides of the filter with K&N Power Kleen Air Filter Cleaner. Depending on your needs, K&N offers Power Kleen in a variety of sizes including a 32-ounce bottle, 1 gallon bottle, or as part of the K&N Recharger Service Kit.
Note: Allow the filter to set for 10 minutes, but do not let the cleaner dry on the filter.
Step 4: Rinse the Filter
Using a cool, low-pressure water source, rinse the filter from the clean side out, making sure to rinse out all dirt and contaminants. Continue to rinse the filter until the water runs clean. It may be necessary to repeat the process.
Note: Do not use pressure washers or high pressure garden hose nozzles to rinse the filter.
Step 5: Shake and Dry the Filter
Gently shake the filter to remove excess water and set it aside to dry naturally. Do not use compressed air or heating elements to speed up the drying process.
Note: Ensure the filter is completely dry before moving on to the next step.
Step 6: Re-oiling the Filter
Once the filter is completely dry, it is ready for re-oiling. K&N air filter oil is available as either a squeeze bottle or an aerosol spray. Both contain the same exclusive formula that came with your K&N air filter from the factory.
Note: The oil can be purchased individually in multiple sizes or as part of the K&N recharger service kit if using the squeeze bottle.
If using the squeeze bottle, apply a thin bead of oil to each pleat of the filter.
If using the aerosol spray, hold the can 2 to 3 inches from the filter and spray along each pleat.
Step 7: Absorb and Touch Up
Allow the oil to absorb for approximately 20 minutes and touch up any light areas until the filter is a consistent salmon red color.
Step 8: Reinstall the Air Filter
Once the filter is properly oiled, reinstall it back into your vehicle.
By following these steps, you can ensure that your K&N air filter remains clean and effective, providing you with the best performance and protection for your vehicle.
K&N Filter Tips & FAQ
Now that you know how to clean your K&N air filter, it’s important to know how to keep it in good working condition. When cleaned and treated as often as needed, a K&N air filter can last indefinitely. If any damage to the filter is present, including rips or holes, be sure to replace the filter.
To 100% ensure the health of your filter, be sure to only use K&N cleaner and filter oil. Other detergents and oils may cause a negative reaction to the materials used on your K&N filter.
The filter should not be fully saturated with oil. If it is dripping with oil, it is over-oiled. Allow the filter to drip off any excess. Then carefully wipe off any remaining excess oil. The filter material should be a uniform red color.
You should never use compressed air to clean a K&N air filter. The pressure can be too powerful, which can result in a rip or tear in the material.
The answer depends on the use. A normal every-day highway rider can see upwards of 50,000 miles before cleaning is needed. However, an offroad or gravel rider will need to clean their filter in maybe as little as 100 miles. It’s important to periodically check the appearance of the filter. A little dust build up is acceptable, but if the dirt reaches the mesh, it is a good time to clean the filter. Also, if you are experiencing power loss, poor fuel economy, or sputtering, be sure to inspect and clean your filter.
